In mid-October, street improvement works in Riga's city centre have been completed. In total, 12 sections of streets have been upgraded. Work started in spring with the planting of 57 trees and continued throughout the summer. The installation of various landscaping elements has made the urban environment more pleasant for residents and visitors.
In addition to the installation of the elements, the streets were landscaped and the tree beds restored. A total of 57 trees have been planted; the most – 26 trees – in the section of Aleksandra Čaka Street from Pērnavas Street to Ērgļu Street, and 20 –trees in the section of Elizabetes Street from Eksporta Street to Brīvības Boulevard. Flower meadows have also been sown in A. Čaka Street along Barona Quarter and in the dividing strip from Ērgļu Street to Tallinas Street. The most flower boxes and bicycle racks have also been installed in A. Čaka Street.
Vilnis Ķirsis, Riga City Council Vice-Chairman for Transport Infrastructure and Development, states: "This year, 60 different types of benches, 225 bicycle racks and 56 rubbish bins have been installed as part of the streetscaping work. Street landscaping has also been carried out by planting 57 trees and several shrubs and 145 flower boxes. These improvements will not only make the city more visually attractive, but also more people-friendly. The benches in particular are a place to sit down and take a breather, both for seniors and for young parents with children. The urban landscaping and infrastructure improvements will continue in the coming season."
Improvements were carried out in the section of Brīvības Street from Lāčplēša Street to Air Bridge; Dzirnavu Street from Tērbatas Street to Gogoļa Street; Kalpaka Boulevard from Brīvības Boulevard to K. Valdemāra Street; Aleksandra Čaka, Merķeļa, Stabu, Lenču and Ganu Streets. Two sections of Elizabetes Street have also been improved: from Eksporta Street to Brīvības Boulevard and from Satekles Street to Brīvības Boulevard. In K. Valdemāra Street, three sections have been improved – from Zirņu to Laktas Street; from Bruņinieku to Zirņu Street; and from Kronvalda Boulevard to Bruņinieku Street.
