According to research conducted by investment website “Monkey Insider”, Riga is the second most pedestrian-friendly city in the world, with the most popular landmarks in the city's historic centre all within walking distance of each other, clean streets, good air quality and a high security level.
Florence (Italy) is the most pedestrian-friendly city, followed by Riga in second place, Hamburg (Germany) in third place, Porto (Portugal) in fourth place and Madrid (Spain) in fifth place.
Easy and convenient access to landmarks, a clean environment and security on the streets are key factors that attract tourists and contribute to business development and economic growth. The study authors acknowledge that Riga has an extensive and accessible public transport network, but that the main landmarks are easily accessible by foot, taking only 30 minutes to walk between them. In addition, the streets are safe for pedestrians, as the city has a high security level and good air quality.
The study uses data from a variety of sources and apps used by tourists themselves, such as Tourlane and Walkscore, to identify the 30 most pedestrian-friendly cities around the world. IQAir air quality data and the Numbeo Safety Index were also analysed.
