On December 22, Riga will host the Lights for Ukraine campaign, during which the festive lights in Town Hall Square will be briefly switched off to show support for Ukraine.
Last week, Russia launched one of its strongest strikes yet, targeting Ukraine's energy supply structures and leaving more than 10 million people without electricity. Russia has destroyed almost 50% of Ukraine's energy infrastructure in its attacks, leaving homes, hospitals, schools and other public buildings without electricity, heat, water and internet access.
Cities around the world are also taking part. During the campaign, the façade lights of world-famous buildings will be switched off, and concert halls and arenas will experience temporary sudden power cuts.
As part of the campaign, the Riga City Council building and the City Hall Square Christmas tree will be switched off for 10 minutes on Thursday, December 22 from 16.30. The event will be held in the presence of the Riga City Council Speaker Mārtiņš Staķis, representatives of the Riga City Council and the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia.
