On Tuesday, 14th of July, at 12.00 in the territory of the Riga Ghetto and the Latvian Holocaust Museum, a gift from the people of Bremen to Riga - a memorial stone - dedicated to the memory of Jews exterminated in the territory of Latvia during the Second World War will be unveiled.
Many Bremen residents, the German People's Union and several large Bremen companies took part in the creation of the memorial stone with their donations. For years, the authors of the idea of the memorial stone, Kris Steinbrehers, and the artist Dagmar Kale have been working on the creation of environmental objects and memorials that testify to the crimes against Jews and prisoners of war committed during the Second World War.
Edvīns Balševics, Head of the Interim Administration of Riga City Municipality, Frank Imhoff, President of the Bremen Parliament with an accompanying delegation, Rabbi Dr. Manahem Barkan, Chairman of the Board of the Riga Ghetto and the Latvian Holocaust Museum, Inga Skujiņa, Ambassador of Latvia to Germany, Orli Gila, Ambassador of Israel to Latvia and others.
Representatives of the daily media are invited to the event. The event will take place, observing all the precautionary means of Covid-19 restriction.
This year, the Riga-Bremen twinning celebrates 35 years, as the friendship agreement was signed in February 1985. Cooperation is governed by a renewed agreement signed on 22 April 1992. A delegation from Bremen is visiting Riga this week to celebrate this 35th anniversary.
