On Wednesday, 19 October, Riga City Council decided to donate EUR 200,000 for general support of the Ukrainian society.
On 10 October, Riga City Council received a letter from the municipality of Kyiv, requesting donations of urgently needed items – mainly heaters and diesel generators – to provide electricity and heat to the civilian population. The assistance is needed because during the last few weeks, the energy and civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other towns has been the main target of missiles launched by the Russian Federation army with the aim to cut off heat and electricity supplies to the civilian population.
Riga City Council will donate the money to the Foundation “Ziedot.lv” which will purchase and deliver the diesel generators to Kyiv. The assistance provided by Riga will be used only to support civilians in the Ukrainian capital and will not be used for military purposes.
In March, Riga City Council allocated half a million euros for the support of Ukrainian civilians, while in April, in cooperation with “Ziedot.lv, 11 buses of Riga Municipal Limited Liability Company “Rīgas satiksme” were sent to Kyiv alongside with 50 tonnes of humanitarian aid donated by the residents of Riga.
Riga Support Centre for Ukrainian Residents has been operating in Riga since 7 March. There one can access the most important state and municipal services in one place. Currently, 17,497 Ukrainian civilians have been registered after their arrival in Riga following the outbreak of war.
