In order to attract support to the city's social, environmental and business innovation areas and promote economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, Riga has decided to participate in the Bloomberg Philanthropies 2021 Global Mayors Challenge. This is a project competition, where capital city has an opportunity to fight for $ 1 million prize in urban innovations.
"This is an opportunity to show the world that Riga is a home to creative and imaginative people, who are happy to create great ideas for improving their city life. Together we can successfully represent Riga in this global challenge - so I invite you to take part in the survey!” - emphasizes Mayor of Riga Mārtiņš Staķis.
Starting from today all inhabitants of Riga city are invited to fill in a questionnaire on the municipal website www.riga.lv, indicating the area and project ideas in which the city's support would be required.
The active participation and opinions of the residents will help to prepare a really sharp and innovative project application for the residents of Riga, also eventually increasing Riga's chances of winning the competition.
Potential topics for the call for proposals are public health and well-being, climate & environment (citizen- and environment-friendly city), economic recovery of society, good urban governance and equality and questionnaire can also be found on the Facebook and Twitter under accounts of the Riga City Council.
The Global Challenge of Mayors 2021 competition is open to 500 cities around the world with a population of over 100,000. The selection will have two stages with the first round of projects to be submitted by March 21 and results being available around June. If Riga qualifies for the second round and finally will succeed among the best 15 projects at the end, then already in January 2022 implementation of the project would begin.
