On 14 September, Riga City Council Chairman Vilnis Ķirsis met with the Latvian Football Federation and a potential investor from the United Arab Emirates to discuss opportunities for developing sports infrastructure in Riga and report on the best locations for a new football stadium in the city.
Riga City Council Chairman Vilnis Ķirsis noted: ‘Riga is an attractive place for investors, and it is consolidating its role in the Baltics as the location of business, mobility, travel, sports and cultural events. Thanks to the Rail Baltica project, Riga will become the central hub of the Baltics States with interconnected railways, airport, and ferry terminal. The task of the municipal government is to set the conditions and to actively participate in the implementation of the projects planned by investors, to make sure it proceeds smoothly. Investments in sports infrastructure have a high added value because they bring potential for a significant boost in tourist activity in Riga.’
Mohamed Ali Alabbar, an entrepreneur from the United Arab Emirates, intends to build a large sports stadium and football pitch that can be used to host large international sports competitions and cultural events. The purpose of the meeting was to gain the support of the Riga City Council in the creation of such a stadium and its confirmation that the city is prepared to cooperate with and assist with the project.
