This week, starting 5 August, Riga is hosting the first group of 58 children and young people from the Chernihiv district in Ukraine, to give children, whose parents are involved in the protection of Ukraine, the opportunity to regain their strength and improve their health by participating in educational and fun activities.
The Riga municipality will organise a visit to Riga for 100 children and young people from Chernihiv district in Ukraine in August of this year, in response to the invitation of the Ukrainian embassy.
"Moral support is no less important for the people of Ukraine, especially for the children and young people who face the horrors of war every day and whose parents are involved in the defence of Ukraine. Children and young people feel safe, welcome and happy here, so I sincerely hope that during this visit they will experience pleasant emotions and for a moment will be able to stop thinking about the horrors of war in Ukraine," says Edvards Ratnieks, Vice Mayor of Riga.
This year, the programme for Ukrainian children will also be rich in content, and will include exploring Latvia's cultural and historical heritage and nature, active recreation, creative activities, as well as group activities with peers from Latvia. It is expected that 100 children will be able to spend 9 days with 12 accompanying educators in Riga. The municipality has allocated EUR 96 600 from the Riga City Council reserve fund for this purpose.
Last September, Riga Municipality hosted 101 children and young people from Chernihiv district in Ukraine, and provided a diverse programme of recreational and cultural activities.
