From 24th February, a special design trolleybus, decorated with the colours and symbols of the Ukrainian flag, will run in Riga. The design of the trolleybus tells the story of the global initiative United24, which had been set up to support Ukraine. The design also includes a QR code that directs users to the United24 website to make donations. United24 was created by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Today, a trolleybus, decorated with the colours and symbols of the Ukrainian flag, will run on the 12th trolleybus route. In the future, the trolleybus will also be deployed on other routes.
The design of the trolleybus has been developed as a part of the promotion of the global initiative United24. The aim of the project is to introduce public transport vehicles with the same design in European metropolitan areas. The number and type of transport units depends on each city. Vilnius was the first city to support the initiative, and two of these type of trolleybuses have been running there since October last year. Stockholm, Amsterdam and Brussels are the next cities.
Riga has implemented the project with the support of Riga City Council, company “Rīgas satiksme” and “Pilsētas līnijas” Ltd.
President of Ukraine V. Zelensky founded the platform UNITED24 in May last year. The platform's main goal is to unite the world in support of Ukraine, diverting donations to Ukraine's defence, rescue and reconstruction.
Donors can choose from three areas of support on the website: defence and mine clearance, medical aid, reconstruction of Ukraine. The obtained funds are transferred to official accounts of the National Bank of Ukraine and allocated to the ministries of the relevant sectors.
